Which policy is right for you?

M&S Pet Insurance provides customers with a choice of four levels of cover.See footnote **

M&S Pet Insurance offers time limited and lifetime cover.

Time limited cover

Essential policies, gives cover for accidents and illnesses (that happen after the policy start dateSee footnote ***) up to the vet fees limit or for up to 12 months of vet treatment, whichever is reached first. The 12 month time limit begins on the date of first vet treatment. If you make a claim and have any remaining cover benefits you wish to use in the next policy year, you must renew your policy and there must be no break in cover. Once you reach the vet fees limit or your pet has had 12 months of vet treatment (whichever comes first), you will no longer be able to claim for that particular accident or illness again even if you renew your policy.

Lifetime cover

Lifetime policies, that includes Premier, Plus and Standard cover, give cover for accidents and illnesses (that happen after the policy start dateSee footnote ***) up to the chosen vet fees limit each year. Once the vet fees limit has been reached you will not be able to claim again until the policy is renewed and the vet fees limit is reset. If the policy is renewed with no break in cover, the chosen vet fees limit is reinstated to use again so you’ll be able to continue to claim for accidents and illnesses that require ongoing vet treatment as well as those that need one off or shorter treatments.

What's not covered?

M&S Pet Insurance can’t cover everything, some of the things M&S Pet Insurance doesn't cover include:

  • Any pre-existing conditions you or your vet were aware of before the policy start date.
  • Any illnesses which you or your vet were aware of in the first 14 days of your policy start date.
  • The cost of vet treatment for an illness your pet must be vaccinated against

FAQs

Excludes renewals and amendments to existing policies. As pets get older, sadly they’re more likely to get ill. In fact, RSA claims data shows that the cost of looking after your pet’s health doubles every four to five years. That’s why your renewal price increases each year and your excess will increase when your pet turns nine. Unfortunately, once a pet has been taken ill, they’re more likely to get ill again. That’s why, if a claim is paid, the price you will pay next year can double. How much they go up is different for everyone and depends on things like your pet’s breed, their age and health.

** Whatever policy you choose you will not be able to claim for any changes in your pet's health or behaviour before your policy start date or in the first 14 days of cover or for death from illness after your pet's 9th birthday. Please note that if you change your cover level at renewal, the maximum amount you can claim and the treatment period may change.

*** Illnesses that first show signs in the first 14 days of your policy start date are not covered.
