It doesn’t get much better than a freshly made loaf of bread that’s perfect for sarnies and toast. This recipe can be made by hand or using a breadmaker – just follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Prefer a wholemeal loaf? Simply swap the strong white flour for our strong wholemeal flour.

white bread flour

white sugar
1 sachet

fast-action dried yeast
30 g
salt
330 mL
warm water
25 mL
olive oil

Method

Step 1
Mix together the flour (500 g) , sugar (10 g) , yeast (1 sachet) and salt (30 g) .
Step 2
Gradually mix in the water (330 mL) and olive oil (25 mL) to form a soft dough.
Step 3
Knead well on a lightly floured surface for 10 minutes, until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
Step 4
Add the dough to a bowl and cover with a clean, damp towel for an hour, until it’s doubled in size.
Step 5
Tip the dough on to a lightly floured surface and knead for 3 minutes.
Step 6
Place the dough in a greased 1½/2lb (around 900g / 21x11x7cm) loaf tin, cover loosely with a damp tea towel and leave in a warm place for about half an hour. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 230°C/210°C fan/gas mark 8.
Step 7
Uncover the dough and bake for 30-35 minutes. Remove loaf from tin and allow to cool.
