Buying guide: Maternity & nursing bras

Jayne Cherrington-CookChoosing a maternity bra
Whether you're planning to breastfeed or not, finding a comfy and supportive bra is super important during pregnancy. Your boobs might start feeling bigger and more sensitive even before you see a bump. This can happen as early as six weeks in, but everyone's different, so don't worry if yours don't change much.
“You can go up two sizes both in the back and cup,” advises Stephanie Dear, Senior Technologist at M&S Lingerie. It's totally normal, and you'll want to find a bra that feels comfortable, while offering the right kind of support. Our comfy and supportive non-wired maternity bras are the perfect place to start.
Most experts recommend ditching the underwired bras during pregnancy, but it's ultimately your choice. "It’s personal preference but we wouldn’t recommend it as your breasts continue to grow," Stephanie adds.
If you really want to stick with underwire, look for ones made specifically for pregnancy with flexible wires. This can help avoid any discomfort or problems with your milk ducts.

As you get closer to your due date, you might want to start wearing a comfy crop top or sleep bra at night for some extra support.
Feeling a bit tight? Handy hook extenders can give you a little more room in your current bras during those final weeks. But if your cup size has gone up, it's time to invest in a new bra, mama!
It's also a good idea to get measured regularly, because your breasts will keep changing shape and size throughout your pregnancy. They often get a lot bigger right before and after your little one arrives.
Essentials for pregnancy and beyond
When should you get measured for a nursing bra?
Planning to breastfeed? Stephanie recommends holding off on bra shopping until around 38 weeks. Your breasts might still be changing, and your back size could shift as your bump lowers, so you'll get a better fit just before your little one gets here.
You don't have to buy a nursing bra, but they can make life a whole lot easier. All of our nursing bras have handy drop-down cups for quick access during those nighttime feedings. They also have extra features like slings for added support, soft and seam-free fabrics to prevent any irritation, and adjustable hooks to keep up with your changing shape. Basically, they make breastfeeding a whole lot easier and comfier.
If you're looking for a nursing bra that's both stylish and comfy, check out the Hotmilk range. They even have a bra that makes hands-free pumping a breeze.
