Sarah LafargeWhat to consider when buying a post-surgery bra
In the weeks and months following breast surgery your skin might still be feeling very tender and swollen, and you could also have sensitive scar tissue, so a bra that fits and supports you correctly is vital for wellbeing. Our range of post-surgery bras has been specially designed to cater for a range of different needs, from fuller coverage styles for added support to delicate and feminine bralettes.
Comfort is key as your body recovers, so wearing a soft and unstructured bra is a must, avoiding any with underwiring. You might have restricted arm movements so an easy-to-get-on-and-off front fastening style is ideal. ‘We suggest our ‘recovery bra’ for the early weeks, it’s specifically designed to offer soft support immediately post-surgery, it has front fastening for ease and is made of our Flexifit 360 degree stretch fabric,’ says Mhairi Leach, M&S's technology lead (lingerie).
Gentle support and comfort
Post-surgery bras are designed to have added support, with a wide underband and straps, so you’ll always feel secure. ‘All our post-surgery bras have internal soft cotton pockets to hold a prosthesis in place and the fabric and trims are designed to be gentle on delicate skin. Our range covers everything from strapless to everyday styles and pretty bras designed by supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. We also have breast forms in four different sizes to help you achieve your desired silhouette and a sports bra for when you get the all-clear to return to your weekly workouts.’ Got a favourite pre-surgery bra that you still want to wear? Why not try our post-surgery pockets, available in several sizes, that adapts any bra so it can hold a breast form and be worn after surgery.
Getting fitted for a post-surgery bra can be done in-person or online, using our Bra Fit service. ‘All our bra fitters are trained in post-surgery fitting, they understand the wide range of different needs depending on the treatment and recovery stage of the customer.’ says Mhairi.
