Purchase Plus FAQs

What is a purchase credit card?A purchase credit card lets you spread the cost of your purchases over a set period of time, such as several months. This type of credit card lets you purchase with 0% interest during the promotional period.
How does a purchase credit card work?Purchase credit cards work by helping you spread the cost of larger purchases over a period of time without paying interest.

As a purchase credit cardholder, you can make purchases once you receive your card and pay 0% interest on your spending within a fixed period of time. However, you will need to pay your balance in full before the interest free period ends, otherwise you will be charged interest. Once the interest-free period ends, you will pay interest on future purchases and any remaining balance at the standard rate.
What is the purchase rate on a credit card? The purchase rate is the rate of interest applied to your regular credit card spending (outside of your interest-free period), and on any outstanding balance each month. As a representative example, if you borrowed £1,200 per year with an M&S Purchase Plus Credit Card, the purchase rate would be 24.9% APR.
What is the difference between a balance transfer and purchase credit card?A balance transfer credit card is designed to help you move the balance of one (or more) credit or store cards onto another card. The purpose is to help reduce the amount you repay in interest so you can pay off debt more quickly. In contrast, the main feature of a purchase credit card is to offer 0% interest for new purchases on your card within the set promotional period, rather than transferring balances between cards.
Do I get section 75 protection on a Purchase Plus Credit Card?Yes, you may be protected under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act if you use your credit card to pay for goods or services between £100-£30,000 and something goes wrong with the supplier. This means your credit card provider could be jointly liable if certain criteria is met.
Will a Purchase Plus Credit Card build credit? You can build a good credit history by maintaining at least your monthly minimum payments on a credit card. This can prove to lenders that you're a reliable borrower. Building your credit history could help you with future borrowing and access to better interest rates. But remember, your credit score could be harmed if you don't make payments on time or go over your credit limit.
