Balance transfer FAQs

What is a balance transfer?A balance transfer is where you transfer all (or some) of your existing credit or store card balance to another card. For example, you might transfer credit from one provider to us. The purpose of a balance transfer is to benefit from a 0% (or low) interest rate for a fixed period.
What is a balance transfer credit card?A balance transfer credit card lets you transfer the balance from one credit card (or more) onto a new card with low or 0% interest. Your new card - such as an M&S Credit Card with Transfer Plus Offer - will charge no interest for a defined period, subject to eligibility.
How do balance transfer credit cards work?Balance transfer credit cards allow you to move debt between cards. You need to make monthly payments to clear the debt. Following the promotional period, any remaining balance will be charged at the standard rate of interest each month until the balance is cleared.

When there is an offer available to you, we'll tell you the promotional rate and how long it will apply. We assess these offers periodically, so the rates and term you're offered may vary over time. There is also a balance transfer handling fee (3.49%).
How long does a balance transfer take? When you make a balance transfer request, the transaction should appear in your M&S Banking App between 1 to 2 working days. Once confirmed, you should receive a statement from your card provider showing the balance transfer.
Do balance transfers affect your credit score?Your credit score can be impacted by a balance transfer - both positively and negatively. When you apply for a balance transfer credit card, your credit score may be lowered initially, but this is usually just for the short term. Over the long term, you can improve your credit score if you make regular payments on time.
What happens to an old credit card after a balance transfer? When you make a balance transfer, your old credit card will remain open unless you decide to close the account. It will either have a £0 balance if you transferred the full amount, or the leftover balance, which would need to be paid off before the account can be closed.
How do you make a balance transfer? To make a balance transfer as an M&S Credit Cardholder, you will first need to register for digital banking and make sure your M&S credit card is activated. You can make a credit card transfer using the M&S Banking App or Internet Banking.
What is the difference between a balance transfer and a money transfer?A balance transfer is where you move debt between credit cards, whereas a money transfer is where you move funds from your credit card to your bank account.
Do I get section 75 protection on a Transfer Plus Credit Card?Yes, you may be protected under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act if you use your credit card to pay for goods or services between £100-£30,000 and something goes wrong with the supplier. This means your credit card provider could be jointly liable if certain criteria is met.
Will a Transfer Plus Credit Card build credit? You can build a good credit history by maintaining at least your monthly minimum payments on a credit card. This can prove to lenders that you're a reliable borrower. Building your credit history could help you with future borrowing and access to better interest rates. But remember, your credit score could be harmed if you don't make payments on time or go over your credit limit.
